Described Natural Hybrids - Plantae

Have noted a major missing element in the Plant taxon, and that is of the Naturally occurring hybrids in the one genus with two of its species.

for example:
(Genus1 spices 1 x Genus 1 species 2)
Brachychiton populneus x rupestris = B. turgidulus

https://biodiversity.org.au/nsl/services/search?product=APNI&tree.id=&name=Brachychiton+x+turgidulus+Guymer&inc._scientific=&inc.scientific=on&inc._cultivar=&inc._other=&max=100&display=apni&search=true

All naturally described hybrids have been missed or not used?
https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/122303-Brachychiton

this is the same for (with examples):
Grevillea -> http://www.plantsoftheworldonline.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:76081-3
Melaleuca -> http://www.plantsoftheworldonline.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:597842-1

Brachychiton is a big one as have been seeing a lot posted that are the Natural hybrids but can not assign the correct name so it stays as just the genus.

I have flagged this issue for Brachychiton

I am hoping that the Curators are already over this but just thought that I would bring it up. :smiley: :+1:

Thank you for the welcome. :+1:

You’re welcome!

It largely depends on the family and genus. For example, I’ve added many natural hybrids for Orchidaceae. I’m not sure how it is for other groups

Thank you @hindwoodii08, that is the right thing to do whenever you need a taxon added to iNaturalist, hybrid or otherwise. We prefer that way instead of posting requests here on the Forum.

I will be working on getting the Brachychiton hybrids added that are recognized by Plants of the World Online. In general, we will add hybrid taxa that meet the criteria in our Curator Guide.

Also be aware that the taxonomy in iNaturalist is not intended to be exhaustive for all groups. Curators will do their best to add taxa when they are needed to support observation IDs in iNaturalist, or otherwise requested by users via taxon flags.

Thanks for asking!

Thank you @jdmore

the criteria does not make mention of the “×” placed before the epithet of a species hybrid

Hybrids between species should have scientific names (the name associated with the taxon) following the pattern GENUS SPECIES1 × SPECIES2, e.g. Dryobates nuttallii × scalaris for a hybrid between Dryobates nuttallii and Dryobates scalaris . The rank for such hybrids should be set to “hybrid.” Note that the cross character is “×” and not the Roman letter “x.”

Like Brachychiton x incarnates
instead it would require it to be written like this Brachychiton discolor x populneus

would you be able to shed some light on this?

The Code of Nomenclature for plants allow hybrids to be written either way, as formulas involving their parent species, or as “named hybrids.” The Brachychiton hybrids listed in Plants of the World Online are named hybrids, so that is how they have now been added to the iNaturalist taxonomy. The Curator Guide is emphasizing the procedure to use when a hybrid name does not already exist.
