Did anyone on their first day on INatForum get a thing telling you that you can't post more until the next day?

For context I only posted/replied 9 times in total. Is this a normal thing or is it just me?

That seems like a reasonable automatic measure to prevent a bot or troll from coming in and spamming ads or whatever on lots of topics immediately after they join.

I’m a pretty active forum member but I still feel like 9 posts in one day is on the high end. I don’t know what your posts were like, but maybe consider putting more thought into each individual post rather than posting lots of short ones? E.g. you can use quotes to reply to multiple people in one post.

Yes, there are limits. You should have gotten messages from “Discobot” with new user materials.

Also, are you an iNaturalist user? This forum is really for the iNaturalist community, it’s not a general nature forum.

Yes, I did, very annoying.

It is freaking annoying because it should regester that you are already a member of iNat.

Yes, I did.

This is a feature on a lot of sites, as @upupa-epops put it:

I think they still use caution, since there have been trolls on iNat itself too, and they want to prevent trolls/spammers from posting a ton of mess on both iNat and the Forum for staff and curators to have to sort out.

Huh, okay.

How many of them are there annually?

on the forum: several a day, every day, and the volunteer moderators are not paid.
on iNat itself: the automatic systems catch dozens to hundreds a day; and (again, unpaid) Curators have to help with those who slip through, which can vary a lot from single-digits to dozens a day.

You moderators are so undervalued. Thank you thank you thank you!!!

fwiw, the forum inbuilt bots automatically flags most spam and sus posts, and helpful users flag much of the rest :) it helps a lot!

Accept the compliments! You do a lot of work for us, and you all need to know you’re appreciated

Holy mackerel, that is a lot. Thanks for explaining.

Keep in mind that the forum is not a chat room. Posted comments should be on-topic and there’s no need for multiple one-word responses; if you like or agree with a post just hit the heart symbol. If you want to add something to a message you posted, you can edit your message instead of posting a new one. All this makes the thread under a topic less cluttered and easier to read.

Yeah, thanks. You see, the problem with the hearts is that it won’t let me. It says I’ve hearted all that I can in a 24 hour period. Odd

Okay, I’ll edit next time. Thanks for the info. Sorry, I’m the newbie here. I joined a few days ago and barely know anything about it. Thanks for informing me.

I honestly feel that sometimes the heart isn’t enough. Is that okay?

My opinion only: if you’re bumping up against limits in liking and posting, and you’re posting more messages in a day than the majority of other forum users do in a month, then it might be too much. The forum is a much slower pace than what’s typical in a chat room. If I feel I don’t have anything constructive to add to a thread —which is often — then I don’t.

What are the limits of liking and posting? What is the average a user posts in a month?

No idea. Apparently I’ve never reached that.

Then how do you know when too much is too much? How do you know it’s too much?
