see https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/change-wording-used-by-the-system-when-downgrading-an-observation-to-an-higher-level-taxa/3862/60 (and the rest of the thread), if you really want to get into the weeds. the short version is that there’s been lots of discussion and even an attempt to address the confusion, but i don’t think anything has been implemented that has gotten beyond testing with a small group of users, and it’s unclear if it’ll ever progress beyond that.
