Finding User ID Number

For a given user name, for example mine is “pigsonthewing” in:

https://www.inaturalist.org/people/pigsonthewing

how can we find the unique user ID number, which for me is “418”:

https://www.inaturalist.org/people/418

Go to the user profile and hover over the ‘follow’ button.

The user ID number is at the end of the URL that shows when you do that.

For example, if I hover over the ‘follow’ button on your profile I see the following URL, which ends with your ID number: https://www.inaturalist.org/users/2243.json?friend_id=418

Also works if you hover the name on an ID or a comment I realise

Diana, @earthknight’s method seems to show the user ID number but I’m not seeing these by the method you describe. Could you be more explicit about the setting where you see that? An observation? An ID or comment on an observation? Their ID number? Your ID number? I’m confused.

That’s a low number! You’ve been here a long time.

Go to any obs, with IDs or comments, and mouseover each name. You get that URL displayed -

Oh - that is weird - now when I do that, I see name not number.

PS it does show number if you mouseover ID or comment on your dashboard. (Why is that different ?) Dashboard is where I checked last time. Doesn’t work if I open an obs in a new tab.

It’s more complicated than that: I tried hovering over user icons on the Explore page map view, and the first few show as numbers, then later ones show user names, and if I go back to the earlier ones that showed user numbers, they now show names. Seems to be a matter of timing on some display pages - it seems to show the user number until it has time to look up the name, then displays names from then on.

If you’re not in a position where hovering over a button is possible, you can also add .json to the end of the URL and see the ID in the first row of info:
