Just how amazing it has a common ancestor to Lychee yet is so distinct from it. Wow just wow. I couldn’t love the shape of the leaves any more than I already do, so friggin’ beautiful. And just how straight their trunks are, those sclerenchyma must be so strong. Anyone else?

I too have a great fondness for Acer saccharum. The colors of their leaves, not only in the fall, but also the succession of greens they go through in the spring and summer. The wide diversity of cavities, cracks, and crevices they present for other things to live in. The way they smell ever-so-faintly of syrup on a warm late-winter day. The thick layers of salamandery leaves that build up around them if allowed. The surety of even very thin limbs when climbed (have done this in a few decades). Those are good trees.

Yes. Also, yes.
I also like that maples set next years buds at the last shedding of leaves.
Maple sugar is my favorite.
