Great thread on identifying Atriplex (oraches)

I stumbled across this excellent Twitter thread by professor Mick Crawley, an illustrated step-by-step on identifying the Atriplex species of the Atlantic coast. He’s based in England, but a lot of the information applies to northeastern North America also; one of the differences to take into account is that in North America, A. littoralis is not the only species with straight-sided leaves–it could be A. dioica too. Mostly, I’m sharing this because of the explanations of how to examine bracteoles.

Hahaha, yes, I love it when ID is based on basal leaves and seeds. In California they often don’t exist at the same time. But they are most definitely fascinating plants with amazing physiological adaptations to harsh environments.
