Salamanders of any kind. Do I have to look under every log in the forest? Seriously though, I like the idea of a Nemesis List. Now that I’ve been on iNat for a full year and photographed everything I saw, it is time to find the gaps and work on filling them!
Time of day and cloud cover can really make a difference.
I made a lot of observations of Cedar Waxwings last year, but I haven’t sighted a single one yet this year. Bad luck?
And patience
This was the first year I had an abundant and diverse native bee population in my yard, so the parasites will show up. Neolarra especially looks cool.
Hedgehog somehow evades me in Austria, although quite common and even in cities. Haven’t even seen as a roadkill
You’ll hear the cranes long before you see them. Unmistakable, so an audio recording makes for a very fine observation.
Probably ducks. I know they’re around but I feel like I just never really run into them as much as everybody else does. I used to see them fly over my house when I was growing up and I don’t live very far from where I grew up at all and yet I barely see them. Even when I go looking for them I usually just find geese instead.
In my area, coyotes and foxes are often seen, but I have never been lucky enough to observe them. I am never at the right place at the right time.
I guess I can add all ducks in Sri Lanka, with the exception of the Lesser Whistling-duck that I have seen quite a number of times, and often in abundances of more than 200!
Wow! I can’t even imagine seeing that many ducks all at once. I get giddy over just one.
EDIT: yesterday I saw a Common Redshank (Tringa totanus) and this fills the gap :)
How quickly the list shortens!
Don’t you have mallards anywhere in the city? We’re getting 1-2k of them at winter on the river at one park, through whole river it’s probably closer to 10 thousands.
Usually in multiple separated flocks of 10-50, not all at once :)
Still REALLY thrilling though :)
Some people here in Cape Town have had some luck in seeing caracals this year (including some kittens at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens). I haven’t had the luck yet.
I also still haven’t yet seen Cape Clawless Otter, honey badger, Cape porcupine, klipspringer, or genets (I saw a roadkilled one near Villiersdorp, but I was riding with someone else as the driver on the highway, so I could not ask them to stop for me to take a photo as observation). I’d be thrilled to see any one of these!
Local bird species commonly observed that I haven’t yet seen:
Cape Longclaw
European Bee-eater
Cape Rockjumper
Sometimes in the winter, yeah. Not a lot ever though. Usually when I see them it’s in the creek across from my house and there’s only a handful of them. Sometimes I hear them and I try to go out and look and they’re gone already. Maybe they just hate me.
I heard that there are african penguins in that area. Have you ever seen african penguins?
Lots of times, yes.
Bonxies! There is over 50 observations of them in Shetland and I am yet to get one. Unfortunately, they have all gone down south for the winter. So, I have to wait a whole half year for them.
One species that doesn’t migrate however is otters. Still waiting to see one of those, I have found evidence of them (cracked open sea urchins) but I haven’t found the otter itself.
What are bonxies?
Squas (Stercorariidae)
