How can I find out which species are always hidden?

I looked for Western Matsutake mushroom observations, and noticed they are all “obscured”. I’m guessing this is because they are highly sought after by commercial pickers? I don’t think they are endangered - what’s the reason?

Also, can I find out which species are always obscured?

If you click on the Status tab on the species page, you can see information on where and why species are obscured. In this case:

Okay, now for the second question:

Thanks @deboas !

@jasonhernandez74 - let’s hope someone knows how to answer the 2nd question - and thanks for separating that one out! :-)

There are different answers to this question depending on exactly what you mean. If “always obscured” means that every single observation of that species is obscured, I’m not sure there’s a quick way to find that in the iNat interface. Some species are obscured in some places, while having open locations in other places, e.g. Clavaria zollingeri is obscured in Europe, but open in Australia. https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?taxon_id=47170&view=species&taxon_geoprivacy=obscured will show you all Fungi that have at least some obscured observations due to taxon geoprivacy.

There are also species which would be obscured if they had any observations, but they don’t currently have any observations. I don’t think there’s an easy way to find that in the iNat interface either.
