How do you photograph Long tailed tits?

Long tailed tits fly away much faster than other birds. So if I try to photograph a robin or a blackbird I will just take a photo when it lands but long tailed tits just fly away in an instant when they see you they don’t stop or try to gauge the situation like other birds they just fly away really fast. The long tailed tit is not ‘rare’ but still not something you would see everyday so it is quite disappointing when I can’t take a photo of it. How do you guys photograph Long tailed tits?

I’m still very much a beginner, but I love that species and I like to think manage to take somewhat decent pictures of them.

They’re very active and alert birds, but not particularly shy. Usually, they’ll go back and forth in an hedge or row of trees, if you observe them for a while and slowly approach the side they aren’t on at the moment, they usually won’t mind your presence. The key is to let them approach and avoid fast or jerky movements, but I really find them to be unusually good sports.

A longer focal length definitely helps, especially if you want to fill the frame, but an IDable photo shouldn’t be too hard if you’re patient and let it happen on their own terms.

Also, in fall/winter, try to look for bushes and trees with small berries, it makes it much easier to predict where they’ll be.
