I had never heard of this phrase “Busman’s Holiday", even though I’m almost 50 years old, and I’ve lived and worked in different English-speaking cultures. I looked it up.

It comes from England in the 1800s. The idea is that a bus driver (“buses” were horse pulled carriages in those days) would spend his vacation also riding the bus.

There was a British TV show called “Busman’s Holiday” in the 1980s.

“Busman’s Holiday” is a neutral expression that refers to blurring the line between work and pleasure.

If your work is your passion, then working on holiday is just living authentically.

If you hate your work, like someone who went into accounting because it was a good job, but they don’t love it, and they spend their holiday helping their relatives with their taxes, then for them, a Busman’s Holiday would be a bad thing.

Hopefully this helps Tony (and everyone else reading) understand Anne’s question, and maybe it even gives you a new phrase in your toolkit.
