I made a new friend!

I went ahead to my gate a few days ago and found this Indigo Dropwing, a dragonfly, on one of those spikes that are on the gate, you know? Well, I photographed it and went on to photograph a bunch of other things.

When I went back there yesterday, it was still there! This time it was way more tolerant of me. Actually I could go as close as this!

I even touched it on the tail, it flew off of course, but came back to the spike after flying a few feet away. By the way, it also does that when it sees some insect flying around.

It actually makes a perfect friend because it is not like something that doesn’t even move or is uninteresting after a while. Nor is it like is like some sort of butterfly or bird that will fly away and probably never return if you try to get close.

It does some funny things shaking its head and nodding, I guess it’s just scanning for things flying around. This behavior, however, makes it a perfect thing to talk to as well. And till now, it has always “motioned” the right answers to all the questions I asked it, including if the group of Jungle Babblers could eat it or not.

Another interesting thing I did was this. I picked up a passing ant and held it front of my friend. It looked down at it for a while before looking up for other insects again, so I guess it just likes to hunt its own food.

Do you have any animal friends which are not pets?

Hedgehogs! I have about three wild dudes coming every evening to eat, and they got quite used to us

They even eat from my hand sometimes!

Awesome! Always good to know that there are some animals which are not scared of all of us.

I treat most animals (NOT mosquitoes and ticks) as friends. They, however, see me as a predator.

Lol, yeah, especially assassin bugs! I will carefully move them off our lawn chairs and put them on an insect-infested plant, but whenever they see me, they still race to the other side of the plant like a squirrel; same for sharpshooters

I didn’t maintain the relationship very well long-term, but in 2019 (wow, six years ago) I convinced the local nuthatches to take food from my hand.

I befriended a lynx spider! The little guy lets me handle it and often clambers onto my finger if I let him. Will add photo soon.
