I made an achievements app using iNat api

Thanks. Infinite loop seems to be gone too, though it’s still very slow for the last few taxa.

The number of my global first IDs went down to 41, which I’m still surprised is so high. I got first ID in Canada for this observation: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/48219107, but it’s due to a taxon swap. Should probably just filter those out to start with. Figuring out who has the real first ID on those taxa will be tricky.

I did some improvements on the speed, it is still slow in the end but better now, I will check if I can improve it further

I found a species where I’m certain I’m the first identifier in Canada and North America, but it isn’t showing up in the tool. Nuctenea umbratica (Walnut Orbweaver), April 6th 2024: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/205612618

I believe it’s because of maverick IDs:
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/11581012
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/15709246
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/30282718
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/31836351
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/42432688
etc.

So: in addition to only looking at IDs on RG observations, the ID’s taxon must match the taxon of the observation. current_taxon=true

I added current_taxon=true now

Well that was really fun! Thank you!

I also love your other tools.

I saw something in the profile that might be an easy fix

I thought about asking for a species identified tool to parallel the species observed tool - but I see you’ve made it already. This is a lot of fun to browse through for identifiers like me, and I don’t think there’s any equivalent page or tool on iNat. Great work!

Well, you can use that link ( change to your user name)

https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?ident_user_id=ajott&not_user_id=ajott&subview=map&view=species

However, this tool is much better. For example, this link shows 1500 Dolomedes fimbriatus IDs for me, which I did not suggest.. I just not explicitly disagreed with the original ID suggestion when adding a genus ID. This tool shows a much clearer image of 45 IDs of this species done by me in the rare cases, in which I could determine the species from the evidence given (genital pictures, islands with only this species recorded..).

I also love how it shows the comparison to overall IDs and of course it is super useful that one jump to those own IDs quickly.. I wished for something like this a few times when I figured out I have been to bold in IDing a certain species

I was looking at the User Profile tool that’s in the tool set and it lists all of the countries I’ve observed in except Botswana and Zimbabwe. Also it lists Zambia but I assume that’s because I was right on the border as I never actually crossed into Zambia. But then why doesn’t it list Namibia as when I do a search I have a number of observations that come up when I search Namibia because of photographs I took on the border

https://glauberramos.github.io/inat/profile?user=tjeales

It looks like Zambia has a very curvy border, but on iNaturalist, when they created the border for it, some parts of the map are straight, so that’s why your observations counted as Zambia (you can see the map here https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=7145&subview=map).

I added all 193 united nations countries now and other territories!

This should be fixed now

Great. Thanks!

Tried that too but I was not able to search below genus

Cool. Thanks

Would you mind explain your use case?

I would love to see an achievement page for seeing how many contributions a user did for projects. Stats like how many projects have the user has contributed to, most amount of contributions for a project and rankings. Same with annotations too such as the most common annotation and number of annotations per taxon.

Thinking of something similar to the activity log in the Profile stat page for identifications and annotations:

Love your app so far, so fun to see the contributions that I have made!

I had a conversation with others in this case about a hybrid between two species, how common it is in their area and what would be good examples.

So I went to some random observations from the section in their area, confirming some and disagreeing with others. I then wanted to send a message with a link to those I identified as hybrid. I though your tool would be a handy way to do this.

In the case mentioned I eventually took a more torturous approach using the web site on my smartphone.

Additionally: with your apps I looked into observations that I got an achievement. My question there was something along the lines of: I am maybe the first observer or identifier. Would I still agree with my identification from the time back then? While I would in those cases I am aware of other species where I learned something over time might change or withdraw an identification with an easy way to go back for a look.

Another example: I sometimes try to learn from species experts. Looking through observations they identified helps me to learn what is necessary or good enough

Any simple way to add an export for this tool? I love the tool since I like to keep track of my firsts on iNat. But it would be a lot simpler to compare against my iNat lists with an exported csv. Thanks!

Can we have an option on the First Observer tool to search for first observations added to iNaturalist? The other day I used the tool to look for such an observation that I recalled a particular user had made - but didn’t find it because 5 years after the observation was added photos of an even earlier observation of the same species were added to iNaturalist.
