If it helps, David Sibley’s field guide The Sibley Guide to Birds discusses the subtle differences between Hooded and Orchard Orioles.
It’s a good book. I have it in my collection :)
Wow - I’ve just entered an interesting rabbit-hole via reading in the forum about “Identification Rabbit-holes”…I followed your
link to an observation’s discussion, which itself has a link to one of MY observations!!
“the most southern of which is a heavily maculated beetle in New York state.”
(Thank you again @That_Bug_Guy for your ID!)
Wow! Now, where was I, or where am I…?
Happy to help! If frigida does turn out to be a distinct species in North America, I’ll have to reidentify all those observations. You may be seeing more activity on your observation from me in the future.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens! Hopefully you won’t have to tackle them all solo, should they need reidentification.
I hope I get some help with that too! 265 observations!
If we want to make this really meta, one could try identifying Lagomorpha from observations annotated “Evidence of presence: Construction.”
