I appreciate that SEEK may not always make the correct identification, but the only email notifications I have received are where someone else has:
[usename] added an identification to an observation by [me] which is purely confirmation of what SEEK has identified.
Why do people do that? I can understand contrary identifications but not confirmations especially on commonly found plants/insects.

You can find more information on identifications here: https://help.inaturalist.org/en/support/solutions/articles/151000170241-what-is-an-identification-
From that guidance:
On iNaturalist, other users are encouraged to add identifications to each other’s observations, based on the evidence provided, in order to confirm or improve the Community Identification.
Confirmations are important to validate that identifications are accurate. Sightings uploaded to iNaturalist are used by scientists, but are only shared with external databases when there are at least two identifications that agree.
