If something looks kind of seaweedy, is there a "safe" identification?

If it is a relatively new observation, I would leave it for a more confident IDer.

On older observations, I think being wrong is better than uncategorized. At a high level ID, few will hop in agreeing that don’t know, and the ones that do will throw it into the correct category, if not ID it down to species. Just make sure you follow it so you can withdraw you ID if it was incorrect.

These guys will fix it for you!

Is it green? Green algae.
Is it red? Red algae.
Is it brown and not kelp? Probably red algae.
Kelp? Brown algae.
Freshwater? Green (plant-like) or blue-green algae (matting on surface, slimy, otherwise not really plant-like).
Net-like, with pores, or apparent openings? Maybe bryozoan or sponge (freshwater ones exist!).
Anything otherwise not matching these descriptions (saltwater)? Red algae.

If you are wrong, then the identifiers for these groups will be able to let you know. This is better than leaving them at “Plantae” or “Life”.
