I have seen quite a few observers put a stronger copyright restriction on their photo than on their observation. This is helpful, in that it enables use of the data by researchers.
For the use of observation data, my understanding is roughly: CC-BY-NC-ND data and CC-BY-NC-SA data are not shared to GBIF. CC-BY-NC-ND - the record can’t be used in modelling of species ranges, because the result is a derivative. CC-BY-NC-SA data could be used in modelling as long as the model output had the same SA license. I have heard that can be tricky to combine with different license restrictions on other input data.
CC-BY-CC - the record can be used in modelling, but the resulting map can’t be used for commercial purposes - e.g. by an ecological consultancy. CC-BY - even the consultancy can use the map so long as appropriate credit continues to be given.
