Ten years on iNat!
A perfect pyramid! Or as I call it, a perfect Studer Ratio! Thank you especially for all your annotations.
I was helping @sebastiandoak solve a caterpillar mystery today, and one of the things that made it harder, was a lack of “larva” annotations on caterpillars. (I won’t link to it, since it’s not my observation, but if you search my comments, you can find it)
Annotating caterpillars is one of the first things that I learnt was worth the time and effort on iNat. Such an obvious difference, and so useful to the taxon specialists who tend to either larva or adult lep skills. One day … we will be able to annotate individual photos. Altho that is less of an issue for animals, than trying to find pictures of fruit for plants.
I annotated more than 15,000 Lepidoptera observations in Asia recently using Adam Kranz’s browser add-on to make things go much faster
I discovered that I made 1001 identifications on August 11! I’ve never surpassed 1000 identifications in a single day and I can’t believe I didn’t realize how much I had ID’d. My previous record was 897.
Was the previous record during CNC? Identifiers are never so busy!
Nope! It was actually during July. I make a lot of IDs during the CNC, but not as many as I make whenever there are big tides in the PNW. My intertidal marine life pages go wild as iNatters get out to tidepool and I usually end up spending hours trying to keep up.
Today is the first time I have ever photographed three species of Apis on the same day

I met my 2026 goal of making it to 10,000 observations!! I would have never thought I’d someday have this many when I first joined iNaturalist, but here I am!

I finally reached 4000 species. Not that many if you look at my observation count of more than 38 000, but seeing that I mostly focus on tiny creatures that can’t be ID’d to species level using just photos, I am happy. Small thanks to the plants, birds and occasional mammal that helped, haha! I wish I could pinpoint the exact obs that made 4000, but it happened on a road trip and I forgot to check!
Then you get to pick the charismatic WOW one !
Small potatoes, but progress as a very amateur hobbyist naturalist: two months ago I posted that I was at 1500 ID’s and today I noticed that I am at 2300. Yesterday I also surpassed 1000 annotations. I am hoping to get my annotation numbers up to 2000 in the next month or so and now that my ID’s are more than double my observations, my next goal is to triple it. I am motivated specifically to learn how to ID more things in my local area since I observe mostly in my own front yard.
Then I am going to give the prize to this tiny Cuckoo wasp!
and it is magnificent!
