I recently joined the iNaturalist group on Reddit. However recent interactions have made me question whether it is actually managed by the iNaturalist team.

The answer is no. r/iNaturalist is not managed by iNaturalist staff. iNat users have created a few iNaturalist discussion groups on other platforms, and the iNat subreddit is one of them.
The iNaturalist Linktree shows the platforms that are officially managed by iNat staff:
