I’m trying to find the city of Honolulu as a iNat place and it doesn’t appear to already exist. I can only find Honolulu county, which includes the island of O’ahu as well as the northwestern/leeward islands and atolls (place id 1856). I’m having difficulty generating a kml file of just Honolulu city, and also I feel like this should already be a place in iNat and maybe I’m just missing something?
There is, but there seems to be something screwy with it - it only has like 2.2k observations and only 3 of mine. But I have 53 showing in this small area within Honolulu. I’ve asked our developers to take a look.
I found it using “Places of Interest” on the map. See more here: https://help.inaturalist.org/en/support/solutions/articles/151000141008-how-to-use-location-search-on-the-explore-page
Nevermind, it looks like you added it today and observations are being indexed now.
The City and County of Honolulu are coextensive.
Yes. But there is an area known as “Honolulu” or “Urban Honolulu” on O’ahu, I believe it’s a Census Designated Place or a combo of Census Designated Places, and that’s what this place is for.
For example I grew up in Kaneohe, which is a Censuse Designated Places within the City and County of Honolulu, but no one would ever say it’s part of “Honolulu,” and my mailing address was Kaneohe, Hawaii.
I drew the KML file by hand, so it’s definitely off by some degree. But better than nothing?
