Leafwise — a few extra tools for everyday iNaturalist use (by @kragikuak)

Goal of the tool: To make a few everyday iNaturalist tasks easier, especially comparing personal records, revisiting observations, and working with upload drafts.

Niche it fills in the iNaturalist ecosystem: Leafwise adds convenience tools directly to the iNaturalist website. It is mainly aimed at people who want to explore gaps in their own records, save combinations of places and searches, or manage observation notifications more easily. It complements the existing website rather than replacing it.

Is there a commercial component, or do you plan into include one in the future? Are donations requested? (yes/no, explain): No. This is a personal project with no paid features, advertising, or donation requests.

What sort of data (if any) does your app collect from its users?: Leafwise processes relevant iNaturalist page content and public API data, including selected usernames, observation and taxon IDs, place filters, and existing AI suggestion scores.

Saved searches, place groups, and preferences are stored in the browser. Some settings may sync through the browser’s own sync service when enabled. Queries go to iNaturalist, not to a developer-operated Leafwise server.

There is no analytics or telemetry, and notification contents and AI scores are not sent to me. Leafwise does not read private messages or send photos to a separate AI service.

Description: Hi everyone! I’d like to share a browser extension called Leafwise, which I’ve been working on for things I wanted in my own everyday use of iNaturalist.

Some of the things it can do:

  • Compare your records with taxa observed in an area, including things you haven’t recorded there or during a particular year.

  • Show your own observation and taxon counts on taxon pages, following the selected place filter.

  • Save searches, frequently used usernames, and custom combinations of places.

  • Batch-open observations from the currently loaded notification dropdown, deduplicating resolved observation links. An optional filter hides identifications that exactly repeat your own earlier identification without additional remarks.

  • Display iNaturalist’s existing combined and visual AI scores, and help apply suggestions to upload drafts in batches.

  • Open all links in the new message button at once, could with non-confirming ID filter.

The AI scores are not probabilities of a correct identification. Leafwise preserves iNaturalist’s suggestion order and never submits observations automatically—you still review and submit them yourself.

It supports Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. The main controls follow your iNaturalist language setting, with translations for 50 language/region versions. Some detailed explanations still fall back to English, and translation feedback would be very welcome.

This is an independent project, not an official iNaturalist tool.

Where do I find the option to use English ? At the moment I cannot find a language option.

The addon’s language follows the language selection of your iNaturalist website.

Does it work in Safari? This will be a game changer!

also @kragikuak welcome to the forum (I thought I were the only hopper id person here, nice to see you here too!)

Sorry it won’t work on safari. I don’t use Mac computer and I need to pay 99$ per year for submitting such an addon to the safari addon store, so I don’t have any plan for safari either. I think you can try it on firefox/chrome, and I think you will love it. If you want more features, whatever they are, you can ask me, and I can try to add them.

ok… most iNat tools can’t be used with Safari and I (e.g. that one by @ megachile forgot what it was called, but not for Safari.)

I like the ability to open the observations in separate windows, and to filter for disagreements, a lot :) But today suddenly everything is only in Chinese - it was in English before, so I don’t know what happened?!

I’m not sure what’s causing this issue; maybe restarting your browser will help. It could be because I had set the plugin to default back to Chinese when translation fails. But it’s okay—I’ve now fixed that setting, so when translation fails, the plugin language will automatically revert to English. You can update the plugin, and this issue should be resolved.
