"* How do I restrict project contributions to a geographic area that isn’t already in the database?
You can make your own place! Click “Places” under the “More” tab in the site header, and click “Add a new place” in the lower right. Choose the “Manually create a new place” tab and draw a boundary around the place you’d like to create by clicking on the map. Give your place a name, save it, and you should be able to choose it when editing your project."
Description of problem (please provide a set of steps we can use to replicate the issue, and make as many as you need.):
Step 1: While logged in, click “Places” under the “More” tab in the site header
Step 2: Stare blankly at the map because there is no “Add a new place” in the lower right or anywhere else, or any “Manually create a new place” tab.
It’s my understanding that the iNat nodes do maintain some of their own pages apart from the core iNat site. This looks like one of those based on the address (part of the Canada node). They probably haven’t updated their page. You could contact them if you wish, but since it isn’t a bug for iNaturalist.org, I’m marking the above as solved.
I see the link to make a place when I’m logged into iNaturalist.ca, and scharf has thousands of verifiable obs, so I’m not sure what the issue is here.
@scharf definitely should have the ability to create a place, the account is listed as having “organizer privileges” when I look at its details on the back end.
I was logged into iNaturalist.ca. As @cthawley cthawley noted above, the “Add a new place” option does not appear there. In order to create a place, I had to log into iNaturalist.com (which I had never done before).
I have not been able to successfully create a new place yet because the gateway times out every time I have tried to save one. But I will try again in the next few days and see if it works if I try to do it at a different time of day when iNat has less traffic.
