I have noticed that newer observations of species, that are on a national red list, like amphibians or reptiles, aren’t automatically obscured anymore. Why? Many rare amphibians only spawn in one little pond in a region and revealing the exact location might have bad consequences
Is this an across the board change you have noticed or only happening in one specific place? If the latter, it may be helpful to provide a country / region at least, because then perhaps someone may be aware of a reason for a change.
You should check the status of the specific taxon at the page of that specific taxon. It should say in which countries or regions it is obscured and open. Curators sometimes change the settings for various reasons, but it is normally taxon-specific and region-specific.
Obscuration is generally only set in cases where poaching, collection, and disturbance are threats. If there’s a taxon you feel should be obscured in a region, you can raise a taxon flag on iNaturalist itself.
