Species1 s.l. does not equal Species1 s.s, so you are changing the ID there even though you are not changing the name.

If I understand you correctly, this is not actually what’s done in practice. In a couple big recent splits the IDs of Species1 were not changed despite the definition of Species1 being changed significantly:

Why isn’t a new daughter taxon created for every member of the split to keep the old (now inactive) IDs accurate to their intentions?

I agree that this would be ideal, but for practical reasons iNaturalist changed this about 4 years ago so that it was an option (not required) to retain the input taxon of a split as one of the output taxa.
