I’m involved in a Bird survey project in Western Australia where we do repeat surveys in 2HA (80M radius circles) in Woodlands. We do a site assessment in each case to judge the level of habitat degradation. We chose to do a 160M X 4M transect through the middle of each site rather than assess the whole 2 HA. Every tree was photographed, measured for girth, height, foliage extent and density. Position of each tree was recorded using XY coordinates where X=0 & Y=0 in the middle of one end of the transect and every metre left is -1Y, right is +1Y and along the length + 1X. Easy to measure using centre markers and more accurate than using commercial GPS. We maintain the data in Microsoft Access including one field with a link to the Photo. A sample works for our purposes. The transect. if repeated, perhaps in parallel strips renumbered X and Y each time may work for 3 HA.. The trick is to keep your photos synched with the XY. We pin a bit of paper on the trunk with the coordinate for the photo. I’m finding just an overall photo doesn’t always work. We’re working in remnant native bush in the wheatbelt where Eucalypt diversity is sometimes pretty high. Leaves and nuts if you can get them.
