Also, I was meaning to answer this question earlier, I was debating it and the more I think about it, I don’t the answer will “buck the trends in voting”.
I will say this, voters on iNat tend to vote the opposite of those on facebook, making these contests really close. I will also have to think there’s regional bias in the votes. For example, eliminated contestant Northern Cardinal is more likely to get votes from people living in West because they’re unusual, they’re pretty, those birders never see them, while those living in the East just kind of shrug their shoulders and say it’s a cardinal. Hopefully this is satisfying answer.
