The motives for scraping online data vary:
- Governments will do mass surveillance and location tracking
- Some companies will sell your info to data brokers
- Some companies have incompetent or outdated systems, and your data gets stolen
- Hackers will try to blackmail you with various scams
- And many more
Anything you put online can and WILL be used against you at some point.
That’s why computer and IT folks, who know best “how the sausage is made”, are the most paranoid about cybersecurity.
