These are the Pacific Grove Monarchs on New Years Day 2022. I think last year, we saw barely any there. We got lucky this day as it was forecast to be chilly, and they don’t fly until they warm up enough. Even though the air temps were low, the fog rolled out and sun shone long enough to warm them so they fluttered by their roosts.

We also visited Santa Cruz this year to see the Monarchs at Natural Bridges. While not as plentiful as at Pacific Grove, there were a lot more butterflies than last year (which was a heartbreakingly scarce year).
