Nativity of arborvitae to Windfall, Indiana

Hi everyone, it’s been a while since I logged on. It was winter, so I didn’t really have anything relevant going on.

I probably won’t plant as much this year, saving money for other stuff. I was looking into some arborvitae trees for a wind break though. Would anyone mind double checking that these are native to my area (Windfall, Indiana)? Going by the name, I think they are, but this site sells non-natives as well and I just want to be sure. Thanks.

Yes.
Please remember that this is a favorite winter food of white tailed deer, but maybe not a neighborhood concern for you.

Thanks. I don’t think deer will be a problem for me.

Do cedars put out a chemical that might inhibit the growth of other plants, like black walnut does?

It seems like there’s a lot of interest in native plants in Indiana (yay!)
That means you have a lot of resources available online. I found these quickly by googling “native plants Indiana” Lots of good stuff:

I’m a big fan of books, so if your budget permits, it looks like there are some useful guides available here:

I googled first, and found a list of native arborvitae on Purdue’s website. I was pretty sure that cedar was native, but wanted to double check that specific listing.

I would hate to plant it, only for someone to say something like " that’s actually an Asian White Cedar", and then find out I just planted an invasive species.

Thanks for the links though.

Just placed the order.
