Opuntia littoralis vs. oricola in California

Anyone have tips for distinguishing these two? Seemingly both of them are very common in southern California, occupying the same habitat, but I’m struggling to find definitive ways to distinguish them for most of the Opuntia cactus I find.

I’m at the point where I’m just leaving my IDs as Opuntia unless its a mission prickly pear (thankfully much easier to ID).

ask the user davidferguson who is very active in the site in identifying opuntias
