Question about helping with Kingdom Disagreements

I have a question about helping with Kingdom Disagreements. In situations like the one pictured (in this case, the observation is definitely a plant with no insect present)…if I know it is definitely a plant, but I don’t know enough to know species (so don’t want to blindly agree with current ID), is it still helpful for me to add an ID for the genus (or even add “dicots” if that’s all I know) to help push it toward a plant ID or will that be a disservice at some point and would it be better to not do anything?

Note: this is a fairly new Obs, but I’ve been also trying to work on some of the older ones from the CNC and other older obs. Not sure if having it be older makes any difference in how it is suggested I proceed (because there might be less chance of older ones getting attention).

Absolutely. If your ID helps nudge it towards the correct ID, even if only bringing it to Dicots, it is far more likely to be seen by the botanists who can recognise its genus or species.

You can always add a dicots ID with a short comment like “supporting” to succinctly communicate that you’re trying to push it in the right direction, but even without a comment ,IDs like this are very useful in my opinion and help push it to the eyes of people who will know better

I have learnt to go with dicots – follow my notifications – and I choose to delete my dicot ID once it has served its Not An Insect purpose. It is my notifications that show me, yes, it is worth it. I have had a few arguments where people insist that ‘the observer saw an insect there’.

But I have to counter the snowflake or bat or fish or … problem.

The CID algorithm counts, unhelpfully, insects plus hard disagreement as 2 against. So this will need 5 identifiers to agree, especially if Wrong has gone dormant.

Yes, this is helpful. I have followed ‘Plantae’ in my local area, so every plant that’s observed comes up on my feed, but I don’t see insects or anything else. So if it gets pushed to something like Dicot, then I’ll definitely see it and if it’s not already pushed to research grade then I’ll usually have a nosey at it and push it towards the right ID. If it’s sitting at ‘Insect’ though, or ‘Life’, then I won’t see it at all and it’ll stay like that until I decide to check out the unknowns in my area.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I will go ahead and do this. I appreciate it.

I have done this in the past as well…especially if I’m worried that my ID is somehow holding it back from reaching RG, so this is also good to do in these situations.
