Should I pick up pinecones on my property?

Pine cones are an important microhabitat for spiders and many other invertebrates (you can read my paper about that here if interested). As such, it would be best if you could leave as many in place as possible. Perhaps you can rake a path through them so to avoid crunching them underfoot. If you do remove them to use as kindling as some have suggested, please shake out their inhabitants first!
