I have pictures of hummingbird eggs and chicks in their nest, and pictures of the mother as well. If from a same day, can the mother appear in the same observation as the eggs? Or is it better to split them?
according to iNaturalist’s guidance, you’re supposed to put each individual in its own observation. but in practice, it’s your call. unless there’s something unique or unusual about a particular individual, i would just do one observation for the mother, the chicks, and the eggs.
in my mind, the only benefit of splitting them is that you can annotate each individual separately or add unique observation fields that would apply to a particular individual or something else like that.
if the mother is with the eggs near the nest, i would do one observation and annotate with both ‘organism’ and ‘egg’ for evidence of organism.
if the mother is photographed independently away from the nest, i would do two observations but leave a note in the comment and/or link the observations through observation fields
either option is acceptable
But it is also possible to annotate more than once in a single observation, so that single benefit wouldn’t be worth anything.
I will do this then.
Some annotations can have more than one value (like evidence of presence), but observations can only be annotated as one life stage or sex, so in this case only as adult or chick or egg.
Oh sh*t, that’s true.
So do you suggest I should upload them separately? I already uploaded them together, but if it is more appropriate, I will change them.
Haven’t seen the observation, but if you have multiple photos that depict different individuals (eg eggs without adult and then a photo of just the adult), yes I would split it to separate observations.
Thank you, I will do that then. I will show the observations when they are ready.
Here they are (you can follow the links to see all of them just from this one)!
