I think this is a somewhat unfounded fear. Certainly things do get split, and many may agree that they get split too much, but I think this fear of rampant splitting is really overblown. Is every split good? Probably not, but we aren’t approaching a point where everything is parsed out so that it is no longer recognizable. And some splitting is certainly necessary.
In general, the most effect conservation looks at communities instead of species anyway. Species don’t exist in a vacuum.
