Small, Potential Feature Requests

Fellow iNatters!

Do you have any potential feature requests that seem so minor you can’t bring yourself to make them? Or are you worried that the requests are actually pretty dumb, so you don’t want to commit? Congratulations, you’ve found a safe space!

(Hopefully, haha).

Me, I have three things on my mind right now, and I’m curious what you all think. To be clear, I’m not especially inclined to make actual feature requests on these at the moment, because I don’t yet feel strongly enough - maybe there are good reasons for the status quo, or better solutions, or these are imaginary/pointless “problems”.

Without further ado:

(1) I think the default number of observations displayed on the Identify page should be increased from 30 to 100. I suspect (without any evidence, haha) that the lower number was set years ago, based upon assumed lower-tier internet/computer loading capabilities. But times have changed, technology has improved, and I want to see more of them at once! I know you can amend the URL (&per_page=100), but I think it’d be nice if the default was higher than 30.

To be clear, this is the page I’m talking about:

But maybe data/loading capabilities are still an issue? Or is there something else to consider? So, I’m curious - what do ya’ll think the default should be?

  • 30 (No Change)
  • 50
  • 75
  • 100
  • Some other number
  • I’m here, but I don’t care

(2) I think the borders around the photos on the pop-up screen on the Identify page should be thicker and multi-colored. And they should be around each photo, with the border around the current photo being slightly thicker.

Here’s an example of the current state of affairs:

This example’s not too bad, but sometimes it’s hard to immediately tell how many photos are down there along the bottom, because they blend into the background. It’d be nice if that wasn’t the case!

Good citizens of this forum, what are your thoughts?

  • I 100% agree with your photo-border analysis!
  • It would be nice if something was done, but maybe not this!
  • Dude, there is no problem here!

(3) Taxon photos should be framed slightly differently.

Here’s an example:

The bottom of the large taxon photo gets cut off by the line of smaller photos.

Instead, the bottom of the “square” the large taxon photo fills should be at the top of the line of smaller photos (not at the bottom of them).

What do you think?

  • I fully support your taxon photo recommendation!
  • Come on, man.

Anyway, I thought these would be at least slightly amusing topics of discussion. Surely I’m not the only one who has opinions on these sort of matters.

Also, I bet some of you have minor stuff like this you’d like to bounce around - as far as I’m concerned, you’re welcome to share them here. Make a poll even, let’s vote! Perhaps some of these ideas will eventually result in actual feature requests.

As always, happy iNatting! I’m going to go yell at some clouds.

I am pleased to find that 100% are currently in favor of my suggestions! But it’s probably worth noting it’s only been about 30 seconds since I posted, and I’m the only voter.

I agree with orders and the taxon photo. Sometimes I want there to be more photos on the identification page, but more often I’m so relieved when I finally get to 30 and get to click to a new page. I wish we could select how many observations we want from the filter instead of having to remember the URL modification.

I could only vote in one of the polls because I do not really use the Identify page. Nonetheless, I agreed with you.

That seems like a generous enough sample size.

Close the polls! The people have spoken!

I have to say I’ve thought about making a tongue-in-cheek feature request for audio controls on the app (which I don’t use anyway, but never mind that!) so that I could do identifying while stuck at traffic lights… (Touching a phone while driving being illegal here, regardless of your purpose for touching it.)

To be fair, I live somewhere where a traffic jam is having to wait for three cars at an intersection, so going to the city is an exercise in frustration - time to do so many IDs!

Oh my goodness - I’d love audio controls! To be able to walk on our treadmill when it’s too cold/wet out and still easily ID things - that’d be amazing!

Great topic! I support 66.7% of your proposals! And I would like to emphasise my agreement with the identify page one.

One minor feature request that I would like to propose is switching around the “about” and “view observations” buttons in the search-bar-menu. Because clicking on the name of a taxon (or selecting it with enter) should IMO bring you to the taxon page rather than the observations for that taxon. For broad taxa it is easier to get from taxon page to observations than the other way around.

  • Clicking there should indeed open the taxon page
  • Just don’t click there, then

That - often carving off the strategic field marks which have landed in the bottom hidden bit of the picture - drives me mad.
Have to click the picture to see what the observer ‘intended’ to show us.

But that is also an issue, where the observer should crop to frame useful info ‘in the centre Mister Venter’.

Actually, talking of taxon photos reminds me of another potential feature request: larger photo sizes in the ‘choose photos’ box (or zoom on hover?). Trying to choose photos when the photos you’re choosing from are so small you can’t tell anything about the photo quality is kind of a pain.

All of these are good suggestions. The first suggestion (number of observations per page) should probably be a sticky option (not a default).

Me too! I’ve thought about this every time I feel the pain of repetitive stress (i.e., often). If you don’t have this problem, you’re lucky (at least for the time being).

OMG I wish I could vote for this seventy five more times. What an annoyance, I never want to see the observations.

I kinda wish as part of our profiles we could optionally set a slider that indicates how happy we are to be tagged for identifications. Anywhere from “leave me alone” to “please tag me on everything.” This information could then appear next to each person’s name on top identifiers lists.

Often times on an observation I look at the list of top identifiers for someone to tag, and then have to read their profiles. Some of them say they are very glad to ID certain taxa, rarely they imply people shouldn’t tag them, but most often there is really no indication.

To be clear, this is a feature that I would use but that I think is not worth staff’s time to develop.

IMO all the current URL search options on various pages should be available in a reveal-able panel so we’re not googling/referencing a second tab and piecing together the search parameters we want

Not really a feature request per se but I use the Frequently Used Responses page a lot to add helpful comments for newer users. Frequently Used Responses · iNaturalist I would love if they added one that explains the placeholder vs actual ID.

I think you should be able to choose how many observations show up at a time on the Identify page, primarily because of my use of the ‘Mark All As Reviewed’ button is important to me, since I often open observations, can’t tell what they are, and close them, which won’t automatically mark them as reviewed without that button. The issue with increasing the default number is that I take my time to look at things, and I feel obligated to look at the whole page to make good use of the button, so if anything I’d want the choice to make the pages smaller instead of bigger.

All it takes is clicking on the main photo to see the whole thing. Not a problem.

I definitely support the idea of a “sticky option” for the per_page= parameter. Often, I’m fine with just 30, when I’m working through careful IDs within a particular genus or family. Other times, I want to scan through loads of Angiosperm observations to pull out the few that I can narrow to species, and I increase the option to per_page=90 (which works better as my screen fits 9 thumbnail images across).

It would be nice for this option to stick when I fire up a new search. Ideally, the number could be chosen in the Identify dialog, but I realize space is at a premium.

That could be made obvious. Visible on the profile picture - not only - click thru to the profile. Better that the current scalded by snarling default we have.
NO @mentions! (I have a very short list of who to avoid like the plague)

Avoid using a placeholder - until the website is eventually upgraded to match the new NEXT app. No placeholder, use Notes or Comments instead.

Meanwhile https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/placeholder-backup is a workaround.

Or do you mean the ‘display’ ID up top vs the Community taxon?
