I have a project “Mussels of Nebraska” and I use the state as the place for the project. My problem is I would like to included mussels found in the Missouri river that may be in Iowa or South Dakota or Missorui where these states borders Nebraska. Part of the problem is the boundaries for the states are not exact but that doesn’t really matter when it comes to a river. I’d like to be able to include observations that are outside the state of Nebraska but near the Missouri River. I’m just not sure how to include them. I could draw a general shape along the river and include it in the project. Any great ideas?

You could include relevant places for the river in your project, like for example this one for the Missouri river alluvial plain. That would expand the state areas by just the river.

I was in a similar situation, I ended up making a custom polygon in google maps and uploaded it to the Inaturalist place list.
