This is a great game! Thank you for sharing the idea.

Unfortunately, a quick search of my observations and inaturalitst in general suggests it is not too easy to play in Canada, especially since I am west of the Rockies.

So far I have:

Columbian black-tailed deer (BC)
Northwestern Crow (NWT)

For some reason, I have neglected to update any Labrador tea (NFLD & LAB), but that one I could do fairly easily.

After that…
When I lived Back East I saw many a Manitoba maple, but hope not to now - they were quasi-invasive in Ontario, so I suspect they would be problematic here in BC too.

Hmmm. Another reason to hope for the pandemic to end so that I can explore my country again and make some new observations :D

Fun to play. Thanks.

I used only my iNat list (not full life list). I have separated Carolina (non specific) and Virginia to the end of my list. Many things named Virginia are not named after the state, but rather the Virginia’s meaning the New World. Excluding those, that leaves 5/50 states. I have 54 California somethings.

I only used what I have on iNat as well. I wouldn’t discount Virginia that way. There is a lot of bias towards states where more people were describing new species too. And then there are all the things named Mississippi which are very much more likely to be named after the river rather than the state. For a silly game it’s easier to keep things simple and not over analyze it.

661 species observed and only a few state names.
Virginia Spring Beauty
Virginia Opossum
Carolina Satyr
Carolina Chickadee
Carolina Horsenettle
Florida Harvester Ant

Hey dendroica welcome to the forum!

Looks like mine is:

Carolina Wren
Carolina Horsenettle
Carolina Snailseed
Carolina Mantis
Carolina Laurelcherry
Carolina Satyr
Carolina Desert-Chicory
Carolina Rose
Carolina Metallic Tiger Beetle
Florida Pusley
Florida Anise
Mississippi Slimy Salamander
Mississippi Ringneck Snake
Pennsylvania Everlasting-----Philadelphia Fleabane
Virginia Spring Beauty
Virginia Dayflower
Virginia Opossum

Possibly a few more, but around half of my observations still need confirming. Surprised at how low my Mississippi count is, considering I live here
