Hi everyone!
I present to you: The NaturalistaUY Bot
We built this bot in order to keep track on the species being recorded for the country.
The bot is programmed (since the 24th of May, 2024) to review records uploaded in Uruguay day by day and highlight the one that documents the rarest species of the day. It does this through a call to the iNaturalist API that finds all the species recorded a week ago on that day and calculates the number of times each species had been recorded in Uruguay and how many times in iNaturalist, i.e. in the platform in general. Moving forward, we also want to be able to highlight observers, identifiers, places in our country and projects.
The highlighted observations are also being gathered in a traditional project: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/observacion-del-dia-naturalistauy-bot). We might in the future try to add them automatically also through the API.
Here you can find more info about why we did it (in Spanish): https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/observacion-del-dia-naturalistauy-bot/journal/94729-lo-esencial-es-invisible-a-los-ojos-pero-no-a-los-bots
And if you want to reproduce our bot or just check out how we did it, go to our repository on GitHub.
Cheers!
Flo
