Uninhabited countries

From the seasonal banner on the home page: “Did you know iNaturalist has observations from every inhabited country? You can support this global movement!”

Would iNaturalist please provide a list of the uninhabited countries? Maybe we’d like to go there.

For all the 252 countries in the iNat World Tour, iNaturalist is presently missing observations from just two: Bouvet Island and Clipperton Island.

Scroll all the way to the bottom here to see the whole list of countries, with those two last: https://inaturalist.github.io/internationals_all.html

Would be quite remote vacation destinations :-)

So there actually are two? Amazing. I don’t see how it can be a country with nobody there to run it, but OK. Two uninhabited microcountries!

(I’m not actually planning to visit. At this point getting to an adjacent state can seem like a big deal. But interesting.)

They are territories claimed by Norway and France (respectively). On iNat all other territorial units are separated out too (e.g. Guam, Pitcairn Islands), but those are the only “unobserved” ones.

Both of the wiki pages are fascinating reads, thanks for the links!

Well, if anyone goes to Clipperton Island, there is actually a flora that can be referenced: https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/15657975#page/261/mode/1up
