Unintended behaviour when typing project name into Projects bar on observation with no identifications

Platform: Website

Browser, if a website issue: Opera, Chrome

Description of problem:

Step 1: Pick an observation that has at least one ID added by anyone, of anything. At the projects bar on right of screen, start to type anything.

Step 2: The dropdown options that appear will be restricted to the projects that you have joined yourself.

Step 3: If you type into the bar for an observation with no ID at all, the dropdown draws from every project in existence instead, which doesn’t seem like intended behaviour to me.

Here is a screenshot when typing ‘und’ for an observation with 1 or more IDs. I have joined all four of those projects

Compare that to an observation with zero IDs; I haven’t joined any of those.

Was the obs in a German-speaking part of Europe?
On second thoughts - iNat is politely matching the German word und.

If you use - undE you should pull better matched choices. Or however many extra letters it takes to pull Undescribed rather than a German und or …

the ‘und’ was just a random example, the behaviour occurs no matter what text string I start to type, and affects observations from anywhere in the world

Okay - I tried 3, my own, another in South Africa and this (wrong) one in Mexico.
All offer me a list of projects that I have joined.
?

I don’t think you followed the steps I listed. The behaviour only occurs if

that Mexico one you linked already had an ID before yours (and presumably so did your own observation)

I did also try a random Unknown - blank box - still gives me my list.
und gives me nothing

?

Maybe something glitchy in our recent settings for display projects?

I can replicate this. I can’t grab an image of it though, because the drop-down box disappears when I try.
But typing a couple of different strings “bea” and “my” gave me a bunch of projects I don’t belong to from all round the world on an Unknown. On something with an ID already, “my” brings up one project I do belong to, and “bea” brings up nothing.

I think it’s a bug from the introduction of the favorite projects functionality, I’ve made a Github issue: https://github.com/inaturalist/inaturalist/issues/4602
