Anyone seen anything like this before and/or know what mechanism causes this?

Although these are not in México, Oscar González has an extraordinary breadth of knowledge which he shares with others.
I might tag him on the observation itself and ask the same mechanism question there. He is “oscargsol” on there.
edit to add: Here is where he once very kindly explained to me why one Tridax daisy I found looked so unusual.
