Uploading shapefiles for project to restrict observations to specific areas

Is there a way to create a project based on specific areas so that the observations shown will only be in those areas. I would like to get observations on Utah Wildlife management areas to help with management decisions. Anyway to get these areas part of the “Places” database?

Welcome to the Forum! if the place does not already exist, you could add it here, and include that in the project filters

Yes, you can create places in the iNaturalist database if you have the shapefiles. Please note, you do need to have created I believe it is 50 verifiable observations on the site before you are allowed to create a new place or project.

Once the places are created, a project can be created that automatically collects observations from multiple defined places. Please note there will be some restrictions about which obscured geoprivacy locations are available to the project however.

Here’s an explanation about why many observations of sensitive species won’t appear as being seen in a place: https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/help#placeindex

And instructions for how to create a place: https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/getting+started#places

If Utah wildlife management plans on uploading a lot of boundaries, and is planning on promoting iNat, you can reach out to us at help@inaturalist.org and we can perhaps work on streamlining the process.
