Website to explore iNaturalist data - feedback wanted

I haven’t used annotations to search for observations. Should people be allowed to enter multiple annotation term_id or should people only enter in one term_id?

I built the site to allow multiple term_id and term_value_id.

@wy_bio thank you for being one of the extraordinarily talented iNatters who has so generously and capably created something magic out of code. Your site is waaaaaaaay faster than iNat!

Thank you :folded_hands: and I wish you a splendid day :tada:

New features

  • Add the ability to search by annotators.

In this example, I filtered observations where aguilita created the observation, added annotations, and added identifications.

https://inat-explorer.dataexplorers.info/?user_id=115129&ident_user_id=115129&verifiable=true&spam=false&annotation_user_id=115129&page=2&view=observations_observations&subview=media

  • View the annotations on the observations grid view. In this example I want all observations in San Francisco in 2024 with annotations ‘Fruits or Seeds’, ‘Flower Buds’, ‘Breaking Leaf Buds’, or ‘Green Leaves’

https://inat-explorer.dataexplorers.info/?place_id=54321&verifiable=true&spam=false&term_value_id=14,15,37,38&term_id=12,36&year=2024

  • The Media view shows the annotations on the first photo/audio for each observation.

Is this too much information?

Each observation has

  • photo
  • taxon names
  • number of photos/sounds
  • observer photo
  • quality status
  • identifications count (999)
  • disagreement count (41)
  • comments count (1168)
  • favorites count (626)
  • observed date
  • added date
  • update date
  • list of annotations

Thank you very very much for this superior INat observation explorer! Finally I can see all my pictures of a given taxa at once! <3 It would be nice if there was an option to increase the number of images shown to 200 or so :-)

I just wanted to say thank you for this amazing tool !

I like the media view so much (pity that this is not working on the regular iNat website). As streepvaren, I would also appreciate being able to show more pictures at once (e.g., 200). It would also be nice to have a way to hide the map. It took me some time to see that the images were visible below the map (on my relatively small laptop screen)

Thanks for the feedback.

New features

  • put the map, grid, media, and table on separate tabs as suggested by @gillessanmartin
  • allow people to select the number of records shown as suggested by @streepvaren and @gillessanmartin. People can select 24, 48, 96, or 192 records. Click the gear icon > Settings > Records per Page

  • On the identifications page, display identifications by grid (show one identification per observation) or history (show all identifications per observations)

  • Add the ability to exclude species, places, projects and users when search for observations

  • Draw a rectangle to select observations within the rectangle

  • add a download link so people can use the iNaturalist Export Observations page to down the observations selected on my site.

For people who frequently make identifications, is the ability search for identifications and see the number of identifications useful?

For example here are the bird observations identified by alanhorstmann

Thanks for the feedback.

New features

  • People can use the search queries generated on my site for the iNaturalist Explore, Identify, and Export page by clicking on the links in iNaturalist Links menu. My site gets the data from the iNaturalist API. Most, but not all, of the queries that work on the API should work on the iNaturalist pages.

Click “Filters” button, “Species” tab, “Rank” > “Rank” > select desired ranks. Users can select multiple ranks.

  • As suggested by @jeanphilippeb The observations count on the Species tiles now link to the iNaturalist observation page using the queries generated on my site.

Thanks a lot!

Why do I get only 1 page?
How to get all the other tiles covering all these 2364 observations?

https://inat-explorer.dataexplorers.info/?project_id=274258&verifiable=any&spam=false&per_page=24&view=observations_species

You are on the species view. Click 2364 observations to see the observations. On the observations view, there are options for map, grid - see one photo per observation, media - see all photos and sounds, and table.

OK, I see. So, no view showing all taxa as tiles, each tile with a link to all observations identified as this taxon and identified at this rank. (Like the “Species” view, but not restricted to species).

iNaturalist uses lowest available rank on the Species view, so I took the same approach on my site. If you want to see all taxa for one rank, use Filters > Species > Rank > Rank to select one rank.

Bringing this comment from another thread in order to avoid derailing that thread.

@DianaStuder if you want to add more filters to identify without manually editing URLs, you can try using my site. I built a site to add features that are available in the iNat API, but aren’t easily accessible on the iNat Explore page. My site allows searching and excluding multiple taxa, users, projects, and places. And there are over 50 available fields in filters. The search queries on my site can also be used on the iNat Explore, Identify, and Export page.

https://inat-explorer.dataexplorers.info

  1. select what type of item you want search by selecting “Search for”. The default option is “Observed Species”.

  2. Enter in the search term, and select item you want from the menu.

  1. The selected item is displayed in the side menu along with the number of observations for that item. You can deleted the selected item by clicking on the ‘X’.

  1. Users can search for multiple items by selecting “Search For” and typing in a new search term. In this example, I searched for monarchs and narrowleaf milkweed in Los Angeles and San Diego.

  1. Click “Filters” to choose the filters. I grouped the filters by topic and tabs in an attempt to organize the all the available options. When people select one of the filter fields, the counts at the top of the popup change so people can see how the filters affect the number of observations. Currently selected filters are shown in a green oval at the top of the popup. You can delete a filter by clicking on the “X”.

  1. The default view is the map. You can click ‘Grid’ to see the observations, and ‘Media’ to see all the photos and sounds for the observations.

  1. Once you have a query you like, you can use the query on the iNaturalist site. Click the ‘iNaturalist links’ icon. Then click on the ‘Explore page’, ‘Identify page’, or ‘Export page’ to go to the iNaturalist page. Only caveat is that there are a small number of queries that work on the iNat API but not on the iNat pages.

If you have any questions or suggestions, let me know.

  1. add observation fields to filters.

  2. display observations fields on the observations card .

Hopefully with annotations and observation fields available in filters and observation card, it will make it easier to find and view that information

Observations with ‘Eating’ observation field, and ‘Life State’ annotations.
https://inat-explorer.dataexplorers.info/?verifiable=true&spam=false&per_page=24&field%3AEating=&term_id=1&view=observations_observations&subview=grid

  1. allow users to choose what fields to display on the observations card from the settings menu

  2. add step by step instructions on how to use various website features on the about page.

  1. add observations API to iNaturalist links menu in case anyone wants to view data from the iNat API.

Do people use the table view often? I’m considering replacing the table view with some graphs for the currently selected observations.

Exceedingly! Thanks for adding this capability. I just found your site buried in the forum on ‘Explore’ requests and am so glad I stumbled on it.

Couple requests/comments:

  1. This may be somewhat niche, but is/would there be a way to add a search for observations by comments made by a particular user on a particular taxa?

  2. Very small tweak, but could you make a bookmark icon for your site? I added it to my toolbar, but the grey just blends into the background, so it’s less likely that I’ll see and use it as often as if it had a recognizable icon.

  3. Another niche one, but important for my uses: can a list be sorted by number of comments or disagreements (and/or number of identifications)?

Copying my current search terms and screenshots of display and filters for reference.

Side note, I know nothing about differences in how such a site would get implemented at scale, but maybe you should see if iNat is hiring? Seems like you have a good handle on adding capabilities to a site! Again, fantastic work with this iNat Explorer!

I just started using the site like 30 minutes ago, but I do find it very useful to be more systematic since the photos are less dominant, and the layout allows more efficient scrolling by key characteristics like number of IDs
