Website to explore observations photos with pagination

I created a website to explore iNaturalist data. The site adds additional features to the iNaturalist Explore page.

I added pagination to observations page. I also added a “Media” subview in addition to the existing “Grid” and “Table” subview that will show all photos and audio for an observation.

Here is an example search for “Monarchs”. The first observation has two photos.

https://inat-explorer.dataexplorers.info/?taxon_id=48663&colors=%234477aa&verifiable=true&spam=false&view=observations_observations&subview=media

Here’s an example observation with photos and sound

https://inat-explorer.dataexplorers.info/?taxon_id=48663&colors=%234477aa&verifiable=true&spam=false&sounds=true&view=observations_observations&subview=media

I’m interesting in getting feedback if pagination and seeing all the media is useful.

Thanks for sharing. Just using it to find observations that need id.

I am doing this on my smartphone. It’s helpful to see the pictures with going back and forth. I jump from there into the observation in iNat next and use the back option of iOS to return to the browser. Used that way it’s helpful even though the identifying process good be faster without changing between browser and app. I don’t mind too much about pagination.

For what I am doing an exclude filter would be helpful. Exclude my own observations and observations I already left an id.

@misumeta Thanks for the feedback.

I added a Review Status option to the filters. If you want to see observations you reviewed, select Reviewed → true, Reviewer → your name. If you want to see observations you did not reviewed, select Reviewed → false, Reviewer → your name.

Since this is about an external tool rather than an iNat feature I moved it to a new topic.

Cool! What is measured for the “popular” parameter? This is a filter very useful on mushroomobserver that I would love to use on inaturalist too.

“popular” observations are those with at least one fave.

Great.

I meanwhile tried something slightly different

I choose one species (Geranium lucidum) and went to all observations that needs id.

I took a look into every observation that is difficult to identify or wrong and mostly left an id or marked a few as reviewed if they where plausible but too blurry and left a comment in these and other edge cases.

I am now done from the newest to the oldest and I am going back to double check and find those I jumped over (maybe because I reloaded the view or so)

These features I missed the most

  • browsing through all pictures of an observation e.g. to check they all represent the same species
  • A button to agree if the id is correct

I think for login the a reusable solution in some tools that others provided in the forum.

And: thanks for providing yours!

Done with my Geranium lucidum identifications.

Summary

  • I guess I did 500 plus identifications jumping from your explorer to the app and back. This tuned out to me significantly faster than only using the app. From time to time I restarted the app because it got slow. I could easily resume via the explorer.
  • I used the iNat identification overview for a bunch of very good observations. To a great deal the advantage of the one click agree button was restricted by the coarse resolution of the overview pictures. About half of what I thought should be easy that way turned to show not enough details to do it that way. For those I returned to your explorer
  • I started to use the explorer for my regular identification activities. It’s very helpful to combine several areas and a bunch of species.
  • What I now miss most is an opportunity to exclude my own observations.
  • Some the profile pictures disappeared in the explorer view. Maybe you have an idea how I can fix this.

Edit: the profile pictures reappeared meanwhile

And again: thank you so much!

Edit:

Practiced a bit.

I know understand how to use the search and filter options.

Thank you so much for sharing. It’s now my regular starting point for identifying observations.
