I noticed some repeat observations from different accounts and they were all using a stolen photo. These accounts had multiple stolen photos posted, some with different sets of photos that led to me finding more acounts using the same stolen photos. I’m not sure if they were all created to be fake accounts because I looked through one before it got banned and there were seemingly normal observations that were posted 2 years ago.
I’m not sure if someone is testing bots or hacking accounts but this felt weird. I’m not sure what the point is either.
Some examples of the fake observations with the link to the original observation:

If you encounter stolen/copyrighted images, please flag them directly on iNat. If there are situations like the one you describe, where certain users are uploading many stolen images, you can flag an observation or image and leave an explanatory comment. That way curators can investigate and potentially suspend these users
Some reasons we noticed in India are: to pass school assignments with low effort, projects/programs that depend on iNat and use no. of observations as metric for certificates or participation or such - goodhart law , and mostly not understanding differences of iNaturalist vs other social media (where people routinely repost others images)
I had seen this topic posted a couple of days after I was ‘caught’ giving an ID to one of these observations, only to see it pulled a day later for copyright violation.
Be aware that at least some of these exact same photos were again posted in the ‘unknown’ group for ID’s today. As with the original post, I have no idea what the point is. More than one has already been flagged and pulled for copyright violations, but the issue seems to be continuing in regards to these specific observations/users, so vigilance (as always) is highly recommended.
If you notice any new uploads of this particular image set, can you please private message me with a link?
It’s a particular professor who has been assigning one of their classes to upload this set of images. They have promised (as of Dec 3) to not ask their students to do so any longer, but clearly the message has not gotten through to all of the students.
I assume you’re referring to the project at a CA college. Another new user posted the same 100+ pics yesterday and I flagged copyright for some. Flagging hasn’t so far stopped the problem. Could we be given an update on how this is being addressed?
