What are some blue organisms you have photographed?

Just yesterday I saw this flower: Scilla siberica

I seemingly just forgot about it despite really liking this species (a neighbour had a hazelnut tree with a whole carpet of these underneath). Very blue. Very pretty. :)

The most surprising blue thing I’ve photographed is the patches of blue on a leafhopper. These are symmetrical, so I imagine they’re a natural variation.

Like @ra_teo, I’ve found a blue snail (Oxychilus sp.)

and blue flies (Calliphoridae).

I also have a blue orchard bee (Osmia lignaria)

and a very pretty blue wasp.

Though I don’t have an observation of my own, I hope someone will share an invertebrate iridovirus.

Most of the blue dragons and damsels in my files have already been mentioned, but not this ebony jewelwing (Calopteryx maculata)

Also, it’s true that among terrestrial animals (unlike plants, and unlike aquatic organisms) purple is remarkably hard to find. In my local area the only example I can think of is the iridescence of Columba livia, the feral pigeon.

(Edit: I suppose the question is, what’s your favorite photo you’ve taken of a blue animal? Well, I have a whole heap of mediocre shots of bluets and forktails, so I guess the answer is “none so far, still hoping.” Flighty little guys they are.)

My fav blue thing that I saw is probably this cobalt blue fungus (Terana coerulea).
The deep blue it produces is so striking that it looks like a color that shouldn’t exist.

Also, I love forget-me-nots, so I have to add one, but they are so difficult to ID to species level.

We saw this Brandt’s Cormorant Urile penicillatus at La Jolla, California, in October.

I’ve been waiting but no one else has posted the blue-footed booby.

We saw this booby on the sandy beach to the south of Los Muertos Beach in Puerto Vallarta earlier this month (March 2025).

That they are. Even so, I love my little neon matchsticks. :sparkling_heart:
I also love that photo of the Ebony Jewelwing. I’ve managed to capture the metallic green of their bodies, but I haven’t managed to document the amazing color-shifting ability, so getting a blue shot has eluded me. Nice job!
