This is my favorite observation by another user. I don’t know how I came across it, because I don’t ID birds. I must have been IDing a plant for them, and looked at their other observations; that’s a good way to find interesting things!

Another observation that meant a lot to me was this one that I found after reading an article about how Solenopsis geminata was eliminated on Tiwi island (it was an introduced fire ant.) So this might be the last observation of this ant in this location… but the person posting it didn’t know that. So I told them. I hope they see it!

My own observations are more mundane. I saw a nuptial flight of tiny Solenopsis molesta in the middle of a busy street in the Bronx. And ants really inspire me with their resilience. I was picking up trash on the median and found them under a bottle cap.

To be clear, @AdamWargon is not a forum moderator or an iNat curator. He doesn’t make decisions about how long topics should stay open, or if they close automatically. I think he’s just trying to be helpful.
It’s the default that Discourse sets. For the most part I think it works fine. IMO topics like “what’s your favorite observation” and “show me photos of [x color] organisms” aren’t really what the forum is for. The forum is for constructive conversations. But people seem to like these more “list”-y topics that have no definitive conclusion and they’re generally not a moderation burden, so they’re here. If they become an issue, we can revisit them.
