I updated my Will recently and the state of online accounts is not mentioned or considered (although perhaps it should be!). I just spoke to my spouse, and she will not delete any of my online accounts.
Some people have expressed concern that perhaps iNaturalist for some reason might delete their accounts after they have passed. Frankly, I don’t think iNaturalist is set up to even notice someone’s death, nor should they.
I am not an attorney nor am I going to feign knowledge of laws where I do not reside, but this post by @tiwane seems to touch on related territory.
Digital assets may include email accounts, photo storage, social media accounts, websites, log-ins, etc. How you handle them is a personal decision as well as a legal one. (Some platforms disallow access after death, stated in TOS.)
And let me take this moment to apologize for how very far afield your topic has gone. :(
Personally, I view this as taking away resources from the main purpose of iNaturalist, and I would not be happy learning that my monthly donations were being spent on lawyers’ fees.
We each have our outrage points, I think. (Personally, I wouldn’t be happy to think I had updated my will in 2026 and not been prompted to address digital assets.)
I believe pretty much all non-profits have legal advisors, some offering advice as a donation, others at a fixed rate. I have no idea how iNat is structuring their legal services but I, for one, am glad they have them in place. (cough cough, Australian mushrooms)

Just to clearly reiterate: we strongly encourage everyone who cares about the legacy of their observations and identifications to make their wishes clear for their iNat account — especially by formalizing it as part of an estate planning process.
