Most people notice a lot less outdoors than a naturalist does; “invert blindness” is probably nearly as bad as “plant blindness”, maybe a bit less so because most inverts move and have a bad rap. We don’t allocate equal attention to every object in our immediate environment, otherwise we’d be quickly overwhelmed and unable to function. We’re selective about what seems relevant to us and are pretty good at inadvertently ignoring everything else.
We’re just getting out of winter here in Canada. Some fungus gnats managed to survive in our house because of how many plants we have, but I barely noticed them. Otherwise my only significant IRL interaction with invertebrates that I can think of has been eating honey (which is pretty indirect) and seeing marine inverts at the aquarium on Christmas break (but we were really there for the fish). In the meantime I’ve eaten fish multiple times. Even in the summer if I stay inside I barely notice the flies buzzing around every day whereas a single fishing trip would be a big ordeal that takes up a lot of mental space. For most people I think the most attention they’d give to inverts would be to mosquitoes, ticks, and leeches, being together in the same category of “gross bugs that violate your bodily integrity”.
