I love this and agree 100%
Very neat thread. Mine is hands down Everglades National Park. Favorite lifer here so far is this mudnsnake:
American Crocodile, Florida Tree Snail, and White-crowned doves are also noteworthy mentions
I’ve always wanted to visit Everglades National Park. Been to Florida twice but neither time for Herping.
Owl’s Hill Nature Sanctuary in TN. Small, but plenty of nature to go around. I’m a volunteer there, and that’s given me a whole 'nother window to the space. The staff has been nice enough to let me get into all sorts of mischief. ^^
After that… There’s a pollinator garden behind a historical school in town that I’m quite fond of. The Hiwassee/Ocoee Scenic River State Park has been quite nice the handful of times I’ve gone camping there. It’s great for millipedes and night bugging. (The bathhouses always have interesting guests gathered around their lights.) I really need to see about getting permission to run a blacklight setup in my site the next time I’m out there…
Also, the responses depend a lot on the actual physical SIZE of the country you’re in. As a Canadian, I haven’t even been to even a tiny fraction of the places I’d like to check out.
As a mostly happy bug-watcher (or bugger, if you prefer), I’m still working on my local list which after almost 3 years on iNat has just hit 1400 species. By local, I mean region, which for me is 716 sq miles.
And I KNOW there are many local areas that I still want to get to – except for the time and distance commitment (and my health) that slows that down.
