I’ve recently become quite enamored with mosquitoes, actually. There are a lot of cool species in Florida! Agree about the invasives though; interesting that I have a lot of the same ones in my area (sorry about the mosquitofish that are native where I live)

True. From 95% of our reptiles being invasive to half of our plants, a significant portion of the biodiversity here is invasive.

yeah, I can definitely appreciate mosquitoes as cool little critters, but I mysteriously become less appreciative when a small swarm decides to circle my head for half an hour

Honeybees. Nothing more disappointing than finding a promising stand of flowering plants and discovering that the hymenopteran visitors are all Apis mellifera rather than the wild bees you were hoping for.
I really don’t like ticks, but here my issue is with seeing them after I have come back from iNatting; seeing them while iNatting (on some object other than my person) would at least mean that I have a chance to avoid becoming an involuntary blood donor.
I n terms of natives, I have been places and had lots of sandflies, mosquitos, and been covered in ticks a few times, but the bites I have generally found the most annoying is when you get covered in leeches and the bites just dont stop bleeding. I really should get some leech gear for next time I am in one of those areas, though usually I dont really think about it until I am somewhere seeing leeches all over the tracks/bush.

Poison ivy. It’s abundant at both local spots I go to and I get to choose between getting a better look at X or avoiding the stuff.
The dislike not seeing snakes.
It’s hard to ‘see’ noise pollution, but I agree–it’s more than a headache. It’s disrupting wild populations from the ocean depths up.
A large part of resolving that is going to be helped by moving to electrical motors for vehicles and lots of other noise blights like leaf blowers/lawnmowers (or LAWNS in general, I suppose). But it’s also a very main streak in predominantly male subcultures that equates loud, disruptive noises with an expression of their masculinity. And marketers and companies know this and use it as a selling point. Take EV motorcycles which contain amplified speakers to play the sounds of ‘authentic’ gas-powered engines, for example.
As for trail trash, how long does it take a cellulose cigarette filter to decompose? And yet it’s one of the most common trash items I see on the trail.
But even with trail trash there’s a lot of ‘invisible’ items out there. How many times have I seen acrylic painted stones, or kids ‘nature’ craft items covered with aluminized glitter, or constructed with plastic coatings etc.
There remains a lot of education about the ‘under the radar’ litter pollution out there.
Then there’s chemical which is rarely visible at all. But perhaps the most dangerous.
Anyhow, pollution isn’t a taxa, it’s only evidence of the species with the most notorious pollution record ever.
As for light pollution, again visible – not a taxa, but it is really too visible.
Not just blocking our view of the stars, but for real astronomers as well! And we know now how light pollution’s disorientation on many migrating species has a horrible kill count.
Invasives, man. So many invasives. Garlic mustard, japanese pachysandra, amur honeysuckle, and multiflora rose are my four that I just hateeee to see.
Beyond that though… Unleashed dogs. SO MANY unleashed, poorly trained dogs. And their owners that just let them run up and start sniffing you. Don’t get me wrong, I like dogs in general, but I’m firmly of the belief that they need to both be on leash and need to be kept out of parks they aren’t allowed in (why yes, I did just get back from the smokies and saw unleashed, non-service dogs on alum cave trail)
EDIT: HOW COULD I FORGET CALLERY PEARS. The actual worst. Northeast Ohio smells perpetually bad right now.

I wondered if anyone would go there. I guess I should have qualified that to “in the span of human history” or something. But I guess ‘notorious’ is a human term, in any case.
Light pollution is such a huge one. I get that to some extent, people need street lights for safety, but like… install muted, directional bulbs. The streetlight outside my house is the brightest undirected LED bulb i think ive ever seen, and its assisted by my neighor’s bright, always on, garage light. I literally cant sleep without blackout curtains, its so bad.
And then you have like…
Shopping centers and sports stadiums lighting everything up like its midday 24/7/365.
Ffs i miss the stars. I miss sitting out in my front yard when i was a kid, watching hale-bop go by.
Dogs. Nothing surer to disturb animals and get in the way of doing things.
As for favs… Also dogs. What can I say, they have a very infectious enthusiasm for life.
